Kicking off the 2018 season, Kolby Vandenbergh made the 24-hour trip to FK Rod Ends Arizona Speedway (Queen Creek, Arizona) on Wednesday night for the 12th annual Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout. With 45 Super Late Models on hand for the third round of the tour, Vandenbergh recorded the ninth fastest time in his qualifying group before placing 12th in his heat race. Transferring into the B-Main for another shot at the $5,000-to-win A-Main, Kolby came up three spots short of a transfer position with ta 7th place outing.
After having a scheduled off day on Thursday, Kolby returned to action on Friday competing in a field of 46 Super Late Models. Following the fourth fastest time in his qualifying group, Vandenbergh logged a 6th place finish in his heat sending him into the B-Main. Needing to place in the Top 4 to make the show, Kolby landed a 4th place finish positioning him 23rd on the starting grid for the A-Main. With $5,000 on the line, Vandenbergh gained two spots in the 40-lap affair registering a 21st place finish.
On Saturday night, Vandenbergh fell one spot short of a transfer position in his heat with a 5th place finish. Transferring into the B-Main for another shot at the feature, Kolby slipped back to a 10th place outing ending his night early.
Wrapping up the 12th annual Wild West Shootout on Sunday, Kolby locked his spot into the $13,000-to-win finale with a 3rd place finish in his heat. Earning the 10th-starting position, Kolby Vandenbergh slipped back to a 21st place outing in the 50-lapper. (Tom Macht photo)
